This 10-year-old dog was presented for vomiting and anorexia persisting for one week.  Upon examination he was heavily jaundiced and had an extremely enlarged abdomen with a palpable fluid wave.  A hasty ultrasound showed an abnormal liver and accumulation of large amounts of free fluid in the abdomen.  The owners elected humane euthanasia and we students were given the opportunity to perform a cosmetic necropsy on him.
This is absolutely one way you do not EVER want your liver to look.  The dog had severe chronic diffuse neoplasia in the liver and spleen.  As our pathologist would say, that’s some bad juju right there.  Poor fellow.
